Thanks to a $5,000 Neighborhood Rising Fund (NRF) Grant, the Independence Plaza Neighborhood Council (IPNC) transformed an alleyway between Gladstone & Benton (6th–7th Streets) into a one-of-a-kind urban art destination: the IPNC KC Star Trail. This vibrant community-led quilt trail honors Kansas City’s rich quilting heritage while bringing neighbors together through creativity, safety, and pride.
The KC Star Trail draws inspiration from the Kansas City Star Quilt Sampler, a beloved collection of over 60 quilt patterns published weekly between 1928 and 1961. These timeless designs have been reimagined across 15 colorful panels displayed on local garages and fences, turning an everyday alley into a walking gallery of history and art.
Professional local artists crafted the larger panels, while smaller panels were created by IPNC residents—neighbors, families, and children contributing their own creativity. The project proves that you don’t need to be a professional artist to make something beautiful, and it provides an opportunity for the community to leave a lasting mark on the neighborhood.
Alley Project Manager and Vice President of the Independence Plaza Neighborhood Association, Megan Morgan
The KC Star Trail isn’t just about murals—it’s about transforming the space into a safer, more inviting neighborhood. The alley was chosen for its foot traffic and previous safety concerns. By filling it with color, history, and community pride, we created a space where neighbors and visitors alike can enjoy a stroll with peace of mind.
This project came to life thanks to:
Grant funding for panels, paint, and supplies.
Volunteers from across IPNC dedicated time and creativity.
Neighbors sharing their fences and garages as canvases.
The KC Star Trail was unveiled in October 2025, just in time for the Northeast Kansas City Historical Society Homes Tour. Today, it continues to serve as a destination for quilt lovers, families, and visitors interested in art, history, and community-led projects. Walking the trail is a chance to experience the intersection of Kansas City’s quilting heritage, public art, and neighborhood pride.
Whether you’re a quilting enthusiast, a fan of public art, or simply looking for a vibrant community space, the KC Star Trail invites you to walk, explore, and be inspired. See the quilts, enjoy the colors, and feel the spirit of Independence Plaza.
